Micro-needling with SkinPen® is a minimally invasive treatment. The treatment takes an average of one hour to complete, depending on the treatment area.

Micro-needling is the process of creating tiny, controlled, micro-injuries to the skin to elicit your body's natural healing response and in turn will induce new collagen growth and simultaneously create micro-channels for topical solutions (serums and/or PRP/PRFM) to infuse deep into the skin that hyper signals your tissues to rev-up, renew and rebuild collagen and elastin, restore hyaluronic acid, promoting brighter and radiant skin. Micro-channels created during the procedure may remain open up to 24 hours. In essence, the damaged collagen and elastin is replaced by fresh, new collagen and elastin. This treatment is used to rejuvenate the entire face, neck, décolleté and body.

This treatment starts with a deep cleansing technique, followed by the placement of a topical numbing cream to the treatment area. After 20 minutes, the skin is cleansed again with a gentle facial cleanser, isopropyl alcohol and an antiseptic spray with sterile gauze. A layer of MD Pen’s Hyaluronic Acid along with the selected serum (cocktail of serums or PRP/PRFM) is applied to the treatment area to protect the skin against abrasion and friction from the SkinPen® device during treatment. The treating provider then selects the depth on the micro-needle cartridge to start the Micro-needling with SkinPen® treatment. Most patients report that micro-needling feels like being lightly scratched with sandpaper. If you are particularly sensitive, we have a vibratory device that you may place on the untreated portion of the face or body for distraction. This treatment is performed in a safe and precise manner with a single-use, sterile needle head. As with any needle insertion through the epidermis, careful skin preparation for aseptic technique and comfort are part of proper treatment and results in lower risk of bruising, bleeding, pain, infection, and scarring.

Healing platelets found within the blood can actually give the same benefits as a facelift when used correctly— without the surgery and recovery time. By using your own PRP/PRFM with treatment it can cut recovery time in half. For best results, we recommend Micro-needling with PRP/PRFM.

For enhanced results, we end all Micro-needling with SkinPen® treatments with 20 minutes of LED light. The trifecta combination of Micro-needling with SkinPen®, PRP/PRFM and/or serums, followed by LED light treats multiple skin concerns in just one session.

To receive the best results, it is advised to schedule a series of three to four treatments, repeated every 4-6 weeks, initially. For preventative aging, 4 or more treatments are needed. For scar treatment, 6 or more treatments are suggested. Additional treatments may be needed to maintain your desired results. Then, biannual maintenance treatments are recommended to maintain your results.

Everyone’s skin profile is different, so the number of treatments and results can vary from patient to patient. A wide-range of factors including age, genetics, hormones, lifestyle, health, diet, metabolism, weight loss or weight gain, skin type, sun exposure, and other circumstances not related to Micro-needling with SkinPen® can affect your treatment outcome and diminish the effects of any aesthetic treatment after a while. Our treating provider creates a custom treatment plan to best achieve your desired, long-term results.

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience a small amount of pinpoint bleeding (at the treatment area) and your skin will be slightly red in appearance similar to a mild sunburn, temporary redness and warm to touch from flushing of the skin. A major benefit of Micro-needling with SkinPen® is that it requires little downtime and you will be able to return to your daily routine shortly after the treatment. Typically, the healing time depends on the severity of the damaged skin and the depth of the treatment. Patients eligible for this treatment must adhere to the post micro-needling skin care regimen that will preserve the effects of Micro-needling with SkinPen®, to both strengthen the skin and minimize recovery time.

The most commonly reported side effects include histamine reaction, mild-moderate sunburn, temporary redness/erythema and warm to touch from flushing of the skin (up to a few hours). You may experience hematoma/bruising, swelling/edema, photosensitive reaction, tightness, itching, flaking, peeling, scaling/dryness, rough skin, scabbing, burning, tingling, tenderness/discomfort, sensitive to touch, feeling of pressure or fullness, occasional stinging and/or prickly sensation. Milia, hypo-pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation (usually resolves after a month), freckles may temporarily lighten or permanently disappear in treated areas. These side effects generally resolve within a few hours to a few days without any further complications.

While some patients may see superficial improvement within two weeks after undergoing the initial treatment, radiant skin is apparent as the deeper skin continues its healing process. Remember, dermal collagen remodeling occurs at the cellular level and generally will take 3-6 months to see noticeable results. Micro-needling with SkinPen® will not completely or permanently improve skin texture, tone, elasticity, hyperpigmentation, scars, fine lines and wrinkles. The results can last for one to two years, until you age it away again. If you stop treatment, your skin will progressively age back to baseline in time. Be mindful of the fact that results vary and research documenting the longevity of results is still ongoing.
